What is a Convex Mirror?
A convex mirror is a type of spherical mirror with an outwardly curved reflective surface. Its characteristic is its protruding, or “convex,” shape, which causes the reflective surface to curve away from the center of the mirror. The opposite of a convex mirror is a concave mirror, which curves inward. Convex mirrors are typically made of glass or plastic with a reflective coating on their curved surface.
How Does a Convex Mirror Work?
The working principle of a convex mirror is based on the principle of reflection. When light rays strike the reflective surface of the mirror, they bounce off at the same angle at which they approach. This process forms an image that we perceive when looking into the mirror.
The defining characteristic of a convex mirror is its outward curvature. This curvature causes incoming parallel rays of light to diverge or spread out after reflection. This property is known as “divergent reflection.” Consequently, when we look at a convex mirror, it appears to reflect a wider area than the actual situation.
